AHMEDABAD: The stage is set for the first phase of elections in Gujarat as 87 constituencies in Saurashtra and South Gujarat go to polls on Tuesday. The Election Commission has enfranchised 1.78 crore voters with 12,455 polling locations and 19,924 polling stations. These are the areas where anti-Modi rebellion has been at its peak. These are also areas that, barring Bhavnagar, weren't affected by the post-Godhra riots of 2002. Chief election commissioner N Gopalaswami, while addressing the media on Monday, said the Election Commission had transferred the Bhavnagar SP with immediate effect after it was notified that he had deliberately made changes in the deployment of police force without informing the election observer. After receiving complaints from political parties that getting permission for using loudspeakers and vehicles took as much as 24 hours, Gopalaswami said it can be permitted within four hours. "This view was taken keeping the second phase of elections in mind," he added. Gopalaswami further said that a total of 14 additional documents can be used for identification other than the voters ID card. |
